Early Years Wales Commonwealth Games Activity Pack

The Commonwealth Games bring nations together in a colourful celebration of sport and human performance. But the Games have evolved dramatically since its beginnings in 1930.

Held every four years, with a hiatus during World War II, the Games have grown from featuring 11 countries and 400 athletes, to a global spectacle of 6,600 sports men and women from across 72 nations and territories.

Underpinned by the core values of humanity, equality and destiny, the Games aim to unite the Commonwealth family through a glorious festival of sport. Often referred to as the ‘Friendly Games’, the event is renowned for inspiring athletes to compete in the spirit of friendship and fair play.

To celebrate this years Commonwealth Games in Birmingham #B2022 (28 July – 8 August), and in support of Team Wales (#timcymru) Early Years Wales has teamed up with Welsh Active Early Years to relaunch their hugely successful Olympic Challenge activity cards for settings and families to enjoy in the run up to the games.

The Early Years Wales #CommonwealthGamesActivityPack has been designed to get your children and families active with the aim of:

  • Developing a shared love of physical activity
  • Reflecting on early physical development, and engaging in fun activities that develop early fundamental skills
  • Being more aware of the benefits of physical activity
  • Providing opportunities to experience and develop an interest in sports

In the resource pack, you will find a series of activity cards for a selection of sports to be competed for at the Commonwealth Games, geared at pre-school children to develop the fundamental skills needed for health and well-being, to use with the children in your setting and at home. The messages and development behind each of these is a reminder to us all how easy it is to support children’s development in everyday activity. There's also a certificate that can be printed, and presented to the children as they complete the tasks.

The resource pack is also available in Welsh. Please visit: https://www.earlyyears.wales/cy/newyddion/blog-commonwealth-games-2022-activities-home-and-setting
