Assessment arrangements for funded non-maintained nursery settings

The draft assessment arrangements (published on 5th July)  have been co-constructed with the sector and sector experts to work alongside the curriculum for funded non-maintained settings.

Assessment arrangements for funded non-maintained nursery settings

This document aims to support with assessment of children on entry to early education, helping settings to understand the progress children make, and helping children by supporting their learning journey.

Our Early Years Education Officer, Kelcie Stacey, who was part of the co-construction working and monitoring groups says:

"It's been a pleasure developing such a reflective document for the sector. I urge practitioners to use the document to support them in identifying where children currently are in their learning and act on what is observed. By developing a holistic picture of each child, settings can make meaningful changes to support and challenge learning.

The assessment document has three main roles to take note of. It provides us with information so that we can:

  • support individual children in an ongoing, day-to-day basis
  • identify, capture and reflect on individual children's progress over time, and
  • understand the progress of different groups of children in order to reflect on practice."

As we progress through the summer, we will plan time for members to come together and discuss the assessment framework online to support you, and to help answer any specific questions you have.

Member settings will be contacted with further information in due course about these optional learning and professional conversation sessions.

In the meantime, if you have questions or need support, please feel free to contact Early Years Wales for help.
