Responsible To: Setting Manager
Purpose of the Job:
To support and work closely with the supervisor in providing safe, high quality education and care for children aged between 0 to 12 years. To fulfil legal and statutory requirements, contribute to and implement playgroup policies; in addition to acting as a key worker for a group of children and communicating progress on a regular basis with their parents.
Main Duties
- To ensure that the setting is a safe environment for children, that equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high, safety procedures are implemented at all times, and fire drills are regularly practiced.
- To set up activity equipment before the children arrive at the setting and tidy away equipment at the end of the playgroup session.
- To lead on setting activities and offer appropriate stimulation and support to the children.
- To work closely with the children, other members of staff and parents
- To help ensure there is a good, happy and positive atmosphere at all sessions.
- Take time to listen and respond to children, encourage participation, and support them in their development.
- To work closely if required to support the individual needs of any child with additional needs.
- To maintain equality of opportunity for all children within the setting
The Children
- To be the key person for a group of children at the setting, to be responsible for those children and to ensure that their progress is regularly observed and effectively assessed. You will be expected to celebrate the child’s achievements with their parents/carers and work together with them to provide appropriately for their child’s wellbeing enabling them to make progress.
- To communicate with parents/carers, informing them about the setting and its curriculum, exchanging information about their child’s progress and encouraging parental involvement
- To follow guidelines and procedures for child protection as recommended by the registering authority; report any accidents or incidents to the supervisor.
- To change the nappies of smaller children, if required
Records and Planning
- To participate and help with the drawing up of daily, weekly and monthly programmes of activities and events in accordance with desirable learning outcomes, as defined by the Birth to Three Matters, and Foundation Phase frameworks, and to monitor the effectiveness of the pre-school curriculum.
- To ensure records are properly maintained, such as: daily attendance register, accident & incident report books, Covid compliance checks.
- To read and be familiar with the settings policies and the statutory requirements for sessional care
- To contribute to, suggest changes and implement all setting policies and procedures.
- To attend staff meetings and planning sessions as required
- To maintain documentation in accordance with GDPR.
- To keep confidential any information regarding children, their families or other staff members
Other agencies
- To liaise with the CIW, social services and other professionals as necessary and ensure that all legal and statutory requirements are implemented
Training
- To undertake training courses and practical training as required

Person Specification
Essential
- To possess a level 3 qualification in early years
- At least 2 years post qualification experience of working with pre-school aged children including those with additional needs.
- Knowledge and practical experience of CIW legislation relevant to the provision of sessional care for pre-school age children and play work for children age 0 years to 12 years.
- Knowledge and practical experience of Foundation Phase curriculum relevant to the provision of sessional care for pre-school age children
- Ability to produce detailed appropriate planning for all children’s needs
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and organisations including parents
- Ability to maintain systems and records for the effective administration and financial management of the provision
- An understanding and commitment to equal opportunities

- An understanding of play and child development and the ability to meet children’s individual needs
- An ability to demonstrate a wide range of practical play work skills
Desirable
- Experience working with children with additional needs and any procedures settings must follow
- Current First Aid certificate
- Current Basic Food Hygiene certificate
- Current Child Protection certificate
- Experience of implementing risk assessments and policies
- Ability to incorporate limited Welsh into the children’s learning
