We are looking to appoint a Senior Playworker for Little Miners and for After School Club. This could be one single role if candidates are interested in applying for both positions.

Ysgol Yr Hafod Johnstown will be moving into our brand new extended and refurbished school in September 2023. The refurbishment includes a brand-new Wraparound Childcare facility named The School House.

The School House will offer Little Miners Nursery plus provision every day from 11.30am until 3.00pm (3 to 4 years) and an After School Club from 3.00pm until 6.00pm (3 to 11 years), Monday to Friday during school term time. This is a very exciting time in the life of our school, and we are delighted to be able to support families in our local community.

The Senior Playworker will be responsible for supporting the day to day running of the Nursery plus provision and ensuring the delivery of a high standard of learning, development and care for children using Little Miners as well as providing a safe and exciting play environment where children can play freely. The School House will be a shared facility so working with the school staff and After School Club will be a critical part of this role. The facility will be used by the school for Early Entitlement as part of our Nursery provision in the mornings until 11.30am. After School Club will use the facility every day from 3pm until 6pm.

The Senior Playworker will work under the direction of the Person in Charge and will support them in leading the setting every day from 11.30-3pm and step up to lead the setting in their absence. Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing high quality childcare, with a passion for children’s wellbeing, and advocating for children’s right to play.
  • Working with the Person in Charge to create and sustain an inspirational environment, where our children are happy and safe.
  • Supporting the day to day running of Little Miners, supporting and/or supervising our team of Playworkers, building positive relationships with children, their families and professionals who may be working with them.
  • Planning and leading play-based activities which engage the children and support their interests as well as all aspects of their learning and development.
  • Ensuring the play environment remains safe and children are secure within it at all times.
  • Liaising closely with the Person in Charge in developing and using the shared facility.
  • Ensuring the provision meets and, where possible, exceeds the ‘National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare for children up to the age of 12 years’ and supporting the team to ensure all the settings’ policies and practices are followed.
  • Working with outside agencies where appropriate to support children with Additional Learning Needs, care plans and/or medical needs.
  • Deal with accidents and injuries using Emergency First Aid training.
  • Providing and preparing healthy snacks for children.
  • Ensuring the safeguarding of all children and reporting to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (School House manager) any incidents or concerns.
  • Adhering to all risk assessments and Health and Safety Procedures.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to own ongoing professional learning and attending and implementing appropriate training.
  • Supporting the documenting of children’s progress and experience in the setting and providing updates for parents.
  • Supporting professional learning for all staff.
  • Openly discuss the quality of the provision with the Person in Charge who will then provide regular updates for The School House manager and Committee.
