Job Title: Childcare Practitioner
Location: Annex at Perthcelyn Training Centre, Glamorgan Street, Perthcelyn, Mountain Ash, CF45 3RJ
Salary: £21,840 (pro rata x 92.31% = £20,160.50)
About Us: A.S.D. Rainbows are looking for an enthusiastic childcare practitioner to work in our nursery located in Perthcelyn, near Mountain Ash. All the children who attend our nursery have Autistic Spectrum Disorder or other neurodevelopmental or communication challenges.
About the role:
- To establish and maintain a range of structured sessions for children who have been identified as having Autistic tendencies or communication difficulties.
- To provide early specialist intervention to pre-school children.
Accountable to: Senior Management Team / Trustees
Duties:
- To establish and maintain positive relationships with the children attending sessions.
- To establish and maintain positive relationships with parents/carers of the children attending group.
- To establish and maintain positive working relationships with other team members.
- To establish and maintain positive working relationships with other agencies involved with the children.
- To provide a safe, stimulating and friendly environment suitable for young children presenting with autistic tendencies and/ or communication difficulties.
- To ensure the toys/equipment are kept clean and maintained for the safe use of them by children.
- To develop and deliver a variety of specialist programmes to encourage development of communication techniques for individual children such as P.E.C.S, Makaton, and Proloquo2go.
- To provide information, support and guidance for parents/carers on techniques used to develop speech, language and communication skills of participating children e.g. P.E.C.S, Makaton, Proloquo2go.
- To contribute to drawing up Individual Development Plans/ Play Plans for children in conjunction with the setting’s A.L.N.C.O
- To contribute to the planning and evaluation of suitable child-led activities and the enhancement of nursery equipment to stimulate and develop children’s sense of curiosity.
- To attend person-centred meetings/Team Around the Child meetings to discuss children when necessary.
- To observe children and compile information and accurate reports of progress for individual children’s records, ensuring that all children’s records and documents required for registration are accurate, up-to-date, and available for inspection at all times.
- To support the manager in monitoring of progress for individual children and engage in discussion with the manager and team members on the planning process for individual children, including discussion of further placements.
- To participate in the supervision and appraisal system.
- To read and understand A.S.D Rainbows policies and procedures and ensure their operation.
- To complete any administration appropriate to the effective running of the service. Confidentiality Acknowledging the need for professional sharing of information within the staff team, the worker is required to maintain strict confidentiality of the information conveyed to them. Breach of confidentially by a member of staff could result in disciplinary procedures being instituted.
Person Specification – Childcare Practitioner Experience
- Essential
- Ability to work directly with children.
- Ability to work in collaboration with parents and professionals.
Desirable
- Knowledge and understanding of Autism.
- Experience of working with children with additional needs.
Abilities and Knowledge - Essential
- Child development
- Knowledge of the Foundation phase.
- Able to plan activities for the children’s stage of development.
- Enthusiastic, hardworking, and reliable.
Desirable
- Ability to speak Welsh.
- Knowledge of Child Protection.
Education and Training -
Essential
- At least CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Childcare or equivalent. Education and Training
Desirable
- Training completed in various forms of augmentative communication such as P.E.C.S and Makaton.
- Attention Autism.

Hours of work:
35 hours per week. Monday – Friday, 8:30am-4pm Term time (plus 1 week of the Easter holidays and the first 3 weeks of the summer holidays).
